What your child learns in science, year by year
Science is the newest part of the Victorian Curriculum 2.0, taught in government schools since 2026. It has three strands: science understanding, science as a human endeavour and science inquiry. This is a plain-English summary. You can read more about the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 on the VCAA website.
Year 4 to 6
- Living things: life cycles, habitats and adaptations
- Materials and how they change, such as melting and dissolving
- Earth and space: the solar system, day and night, and changes to the Earth's surface
- Forces, light, heat and electric circuits
- Asking questions, running fair tests and recording results
Year 7 and 8
- Classifying living things, food webs, cells and body systems
- Mixtures, and particles in solids, liquids and gases
- Forces and energy
- Rocks, and how the Earth, Sun and Moon move
Year 9 and 10
- Biology: body systems, genetics and evolution
- Chemistry: atoms, the periodic table and chemical reactions
- Physics: electricity, waves, energy and motion
- Earth and space: the universe, and global systems such as the carbon cycle
- Writing practical reports and analysing data
Where students usually get stuck
- Learning facts without understanding the idea behind them.
- Science words that sound alike, such as mass and weight, or atom and molecule.
- Writing a practical report with an aim, hypothesis, method, results and discussion.
- The jump in Year 9 and 10, when physics and chemistry start using equations.
How our science sessions help
- Tutors draw ideas out step by step, so your child can see how they work.
- Your child explains each idea back in their own words, which shows what they really understand.
- Help planning and writing practical reports and science projects.
- In Year 9 and 10, tutors look ahead to the science your child might take in VCE.
Choosing VCE sciences
Near the end of Year 10, students choose their VCE subjects, often including Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Psychology. A strong Year 10 makes Units 1 and 2 much easier. See Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Psychology tutoring for VCE.

Common questions
Can one tutor help with all of science?
Yes, from Year 4 to 8. For Year 9 and 10, we can match your child with a tutor who is strong in the area they find hardest, such as chemistry or physics.
Will the tutor help with practical reports and projects?
Yes. Tutors help your child understand the task, plan the investigation and improve their draft. The work stays your child's own.
Does my child need to be good at maths for science?
It matters more each year. From Year 9, physics and chemistry use formulas and calculations, so tutors cover the maths inside each science topic as it comes up.
Will the tutor follow what my child does at school?
Yes. Tutors work from what your child is learning in class, using their worksheets, homework and test dates when you share them.
What if the tutor isn't the right fit?
We'll find a different tutor and take 50% off the first session with them. Your first session is also covered by our money-back guarantee.
