What your child learns in english, year by year

Victorian schools have taught English from the new Victorian Curriculum 2.0 since 2025. It has three strands: language, literature and literacy. This is a plain-English summary. You can read more about the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 on the VCAA website.

Year 4 to 6

  • Reading comprehension: finding the main ideas and reading between the lines
  • Spelling, grammar and punctuation
  • Planning and writing stories and persuasive pieces
  • Building vocabulary through wider reading

Year 7 and 8

  • Writing clear paragraphs with a topic sentence and evidence
  • Responding to the novels, poems and films studied in class
  • Persuasive and informative writing
  • Speaking and presenting to the class

Year 9 and 10

  • Text response essays with quotes and analysis
  • Analysing how writers use language to persuade
  • Comparing two texts
  • Writing with more control over style and structure, ready for VCE English

Where students usually get stuck

  • Knowing what they want to say, but not how to organise it into an essay.
  • Retelling the plot when the task asks for analysis.
  • Choosing quotes that actually support their point.
  • Reading slowly, or rarely reading for fun, which makes longer texts hard work.
  • Running out of time in timed writing.

How our english sessions help

  • Tutors read your child's own drafts and show them how to improve one part at a time.
  • Your child plans an essay with the tutor first, then writes the next one alone.
  • Short timed pieces build speed for tests and exams.
  • Tutors use the texts your child is studying at school.

Tutors give feedback on your child's writing. They don't write assessments for them.

NAPLAN reading and writing

Students sit NAPLAN in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9, in March. The writing test asks for a persuasive or narrative piece, and the reading and language tests check comprehension, spelling, grammar and punctuation. Tutors can add NAPLAN-style practice in the term before.

Getting ready for VCE English

Year 9 and 10 essays build the skills VCE English assesses: text response, analysing argument and creative responses to texts. See VCE English tutoring.

“We have had an incredibly positive experience with Avin Learning. Both our kids love Sim, and she has always been thoroughly engaged and caring, but also professional. I can't recommend Avin highly enough.”

Common questions

My child doesn't like reading. Can tutoring help?

Often, yes. Tutors start with short texts on topics your child enjoys, then build up to longer ones. A little reading every week tends to help more than the occasional long push.

Will the tutor help with school assignments?

Yes. Tutors help your child understand the task, plan a response and improve their draft. They don't write it for them, because the work has to be your child's own.

Will the tutor follow what my child does at school?

Yes. Tutors work from what your child is learning in class, using their worksheets, homework and test dates when you share them.

Can you help my child get ready for VCE English?

Yes. In Year 9 and 10 we focus on essay structure and analysing language, which VCE English builds on. See VCE English tutoring.

What if the tutor isn't the right fit?

We'll find a different tutor and take 50% off the first session with them. Your first session is also covered by our money-back guarantee.
