VCE BIOLOGY · UNITS 1 TO 4

VCE Biology tutoring, online in Melbourne

VCE Biology is full of processes that connect: genes to proteins, enzymes to pathways, pathogens to immunity. Our tutors help students see how the pieces fit, so they can explain them clearly in long-answer questions.

A sample end-of-term progress report for a VCE Biology student, covering DNA replication, gene regulation, PCR and CRISPR

What Units 3 and 4 cover

A plain-English summary of the current VCAA study design. You can read the full VCE Biology study design on the VCAA website.

Unit 3

  • How do cells maintain life? Nucleic acids and proteins: DNA, gene expression and tools such as PCR, gel electrophoresis and CRISPR.
  • How biochemical pathways such as photosynthesis and cellular respiration are regulated.

Unit 4

  • How does life change and respond to challenges? How the body responds to pathogens, including immunity and vaccination.
  • How species are related over time, plus a student-designed scientific investigation presented as a poster.

Exams and SACs: Students complete SACs through the year and sit one end-of-year exam, with multiple-choice and longer written questions. Data and unfamiliar experiments appear often.

Where students usually get stuck

  • Linking each step of a process, from gene to protein to function, without gaps.
  • Reading graphs and results from experiments they haven't seen before.
  • "Explain" questions that need a clear cause and effect, not a list of facts.
  • Designing the investigation and presenting it on the poster.

How our Biology sessions help

  • Tutors draw each process out step by step on the whiteboard, then the student explains it back.
  • We practise data questions from past VCAA exams every week.
  • Students learn to plan long answers so every mark-earning point is there.
  • At the end of each term, families get a progress report like the sample above, topic by topic.

How Biology scales

In 2025, a study score of 30 in Biology scaled to 31, and a 40 scaled to 41 (VTAC 2025 Scaling Report).

Scaling shouldn't decide subject choice: a high score in a subject your child enjoys usually counts for more. Read which VCE subjects scale up.

“Alexis had a quick and effective approach for getting my teenager organised and focused. And she was very quick to understand his weaknesses, managed to get him to self reflect.”

Common questions

What happens on the first call?

We learn about your child, their subjects and what they want help with, then suggest a plan and a tutor. There is no obligation to go ahead.

Can you help with the scientific poster?

Yes. We help students plan their investigation, check their method and improve their drafts. The work stays theirs.

My child finds the content overwhelming. Where do we start?

With an assessment on the first sessions, then a simple weekly plan. The free VCE accountability sessions help too.
