What your child learns in maths, year by year
Victorian schools have taught maths from the new Victorian Curriculum 2.0 since 2025. It has six strands: number, algebra, measurement, space, statistics and probability. This is a plain-English summary. You can read more about the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 on the VCAA website.
Year 4 to 6
- Times tables and mental strategies, until they are quick and reliable
- Fractions, decimals and percentages, and how they connect
- Measurement, area and perimeter, time and money
- Reading graphs and working out simple chances
Year 7 and 8
- Negative numbers, ratios and rates
- First steps in algebra: using letters for numbers and solving simple equations
- Area, volume and angles
- Collecting data and finding the mean, median and mode
Year 9 and 10
- Expanding, factorising and solving equations, including quadratics
- Straight-line and curved graphs
- Pythagoras and trigonometry
- Probability and statistics
- In Year 10, the extra topics that lead into VCE Maths Methods
Where students usually get stuck
- Gaps from earlier years. A student who is unsure of fractions in Year 6 will find algebra hard in Year 8.
- Word problems, where they know the maths but can't tell which step to use.
- Showing working, which teachers mark more closely as students get older.
- Losing confidence after a bad test and starting to avoid maths.
How our maths sessions help
- The first few sessions check earlier topics to find where the gaps start.
- Each week follows the topic at school, so tutoring and class back each other up.
- Tutors work through a problem on a shared whiteboard, then your child tries a similar one.
- Sessions are recorded, so your child can rewatch a worked example before a test.
NAPLAN numeracy
Students sit NAPLAN in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9, in March. In the weeks before, tutors can add practice with NAPLAN-style questions alongside the school work.
Getting ready for VCE maths
At the end of Year 10, students choose between General Maths, Maths Methods and Specialist Maths. A tutor can help your child work out which suits them, and build the algebra Methods depends on. See VCE General Maths and VCE Maths Methods tutoring.
“Thanks to Avin Learning, my child is approaching his maths classes with much more confidence. He looks forward to each tutoring session.”

Common questions
My child is behind in maths. Can they catch up?
Usually, yes. Most students who feel behind are missing a few key topics from earlier years. Once a tutor finds and fixes those, the current work gets much easier. How long it takes depends on the gaps, and the end-of-term report shows you the progress.
My child is doing well. Is tutoring still useful?
Yes. Tutors can stretch confident students with harder problems and extension work. In Year 9 and 10 they can also start building towards VCE Maths Methods or Specialist Maths.
Will the tutor follow what my child does at school?
Yes. Tutors work from what your child is learning in class, using their worksheets, homework and test dates when you share them.
How does online maths tutoring work?
Sessions run on Zoom with a shared digital whiteboard, so your child and the tutor can both write out working. Your child needs a laptop or tablet with a camera and microphone.
What if the tutor isn't the right fit?
We'll find a different tutor and take 50% off the first session with them. Your first session is also covered by our money-back guarantee.
