What Units 3 and 4 cover

A plain-English summary of the current VCAA study design. You can read the full VCE Psychology study design on the VCAA website.

Unit 3

  • How does experience affect behaviour and mental processes? The nervous system and how we respond to stress.
  • How people learn, and how memory works.

Unit 4

  • How is mental wellbeing supported and maintained? Sleep and its effect on mental processes and behaviour.
  • What influences mental wellbeing, plus a student-designed scientific investigation presented as a scientific poster.

Exams and SACs: Students complete SACs through the year and sit one end-of-year exam. Many exam questions describe a new study or scenario and ask students to apply what they know.

Where students usually get stuck

  • Using exact terminology. Psychology answers are marked on precise wording.
  • Applying a concept to an unfamiliar scenario rather than reciting the textbook.
  • Research methods: variables, controls, validity and ethics appear in every part of the course.
  • Planning the student-designed investigation and writing up the poster.

How our Psychology sessions help

  • We turn each dot point into clear definitions and an example the student can explain in their own words.
  • Tutors set new scenario questions so students practise applying ideas, not memorising them.
  • Research-methods questions come up in every session, a little at a time.
  • Tutors guide planning for the investigation and give feedback on poster drafts. The work stays the student's own.

How Psychology scales

In 2025, a study score of 30 in Psychology scaled to 28, and a 40 scaled to 39 (VTAC 2025 Scaling Report).

Scaling shouldn't decide subject choice: a high score in a subject your child enjoys usually counts for more. Read which VCE subjects scale up.

“Really happy to have found Avin Learning. Finn seems really personable and quickly connected with my 17 year old son, and also willing to be flexible.”

Common questions

Is Psychology a "science" for university?

Universities set their own rules about which subjects count. Check the course prerequisites on VTAC.

What happens on the first call?

We learn about your child, their subjects and what they want help with, then suggest a plan and a tutor. There is no obligation to go ahead.

Can you help with the poster?

Yes. We help students plan, check their method and improve their drafts. We don't write it for them.
