VCE CHEMISTRY · UNITS 1 TO 4

VCE Chemistry tutoring, online in Melbourne

Chemistry combines careful calculation with clear explanation. Our tutors build the core skills, like stoichiometry, equilibrium and organic pathways, and practise them on exam-style questions until students can do them under time pressure.

What Units 3 and 4 cover

A plain-English summary of the current VCAA study design. You can read the full VCE Chemistry study design on the VCAA website.

Unit 3

  • How can design and innovation help to optimise chemical processes? Energy: fuels, galvanic and fuel cells, and electrolysis.
  • Reaction rates and equilibrium, and how chemists optimise yield.

Unit 4

  • How are carbon-based compounds designed for purpose? Naming, structures and reaction pathways of organic compounds.
  • How organic compounds are analysed, plus a student-designed scientific investigation presented as a poster.

Exams and SACs: Students complete SACs through the year and sit one end-of-year exam, with multiple-choice and longer written questions. Calculations and data appear throughout.

Where students usually get stuck

  • Multi-step calculations, where one slip early on costs every mark after it.
  • Equilibrium: predicting what happens when conditions change, and explaining why.
  • Organic reaction pathways, which have to be learned and then applied in new combinations.
  • Reading data from instruments and experiments.

How our Chemistry sessions help

  • Tutors teach a clear layout for every calculation, so working is easy to follow and check.
  • We explain equilibrium and electrochemistry with diagrams on the whiteboard, then practise.
  • Students build summary maps of organic pathways and test themselves on them.
  • We use past VCAA exam questions by topic, and mixed papers before the exam.

How Chemistry scales

In 2025, a study score of 30 in Chemistry scaled to 34, and a 40 scaled to 44 (VTAC 2025 Scaling Report).

Scaling shouldn't decide subject choice: a high score in a subject your child enjoys usually counts for more. Read which VCE subjects scale up.

“My son has had an excellent experience with Trung at Avin Learning. An excellent teacher and it's been very helpful for my son to push himself further in year 12.”

Common questions

What happens on the first call?

We learn about your child, their subjects and what they want help with, then suggest a plan and a tutor. There is no obligation to go ahead.

Is Chemistry needed for university?

It is a prerequisite for many health and science courses. Check the courses your child is considering on VTAC.

Can you help with Year 11 Chemistry first?

Yes. Units 1 and 2 build the foundations for Year 12, so it's a good time to start.
