What Units 3 and 4 cover
A plain-English summary of the current VCAA study design. You can read the full VCE English study design on the VCAA website.
Unit 3
- Reading and responding to texts. An analytical response to a set text: its ideas, concerns and values.
- Creating texts. Writing their own pieces in response to a framework of ideas, plus a commentary explaining their choices.
Unit 4
- Reading and responding to texts. An analytical response to a second set text.
- Analysing argument. Analysing how persuasive texts work, and presenting their own point of view in an oral presentation.
Exams and SACs: Students sit one end-of-year exam with three parts: a response to a set text, a piece of their own writing, and an analysis of argument. Managing time across all three is a skill in itself.
Where students usually get stuck
- Writing a clear contention and holding it through the whole essay, instead of drifting into retelling the plot.
- Using quotes as evidence for an idea, not as decoration.
- In argument analysis, explaining how the language persuades a reader, not just what the writer says.
- Creating texts can feel open-ended, so students freeze or write something safe and forgettable.
How our English sessions help
- We plan essays together first: contention, topic sentences, the best evidence for each paragraph.
- Students write timed paragraphs in the session, and get feedback on the spot.
- Tutors read drafts and SAC practice pieces and give specific, written feedback.
- We build a bank of ideas and quotes for each set text, and practise argument analysis on real opinion pieces.
We never write essays for students. The work stays theirs; our job is to help them get better at it.
How English scales
In 2025, a study score of 30 in English scaled to 28, and a 40 scaled to 39 (VTAC 2025 Scaling Report).
Scaling shouldn't decide subject choice: a high score in a subject your child enjoys usually counts for more. Read which VCE subjects scale up.
“My son has had an excellent experience with Trung at Avin Learning. An excellent teacher and it's been very helpful for my son to push himself further in year 12.”

Common questions
Do you also tutor EAL, Literature and English Language?
Yes. We tutor all four English subjects. Tell us which one your child is studying when you book.
Will the tutor know my child's set texts?
Tell us the texts when you book a call. We take them into account when we match a tutor.
When should we start?
Many families start in Term 4 of Year 11 or Term 1 of Year 12, before the first SACs. Starting earlier makes the year calmer.
