VCE Maths Methods tutoring, online in Melbourne
Methods moves fast, and the gaps from Year 11 show up quickly in Year 12. Our tutors rebuild the algebra underneath, teach calculus and probability clearly, and practise both exams: one without a calculator and one with.

What Units 3 and 4 cover
A plain-English summary of the current VCAA study design. You can read the full VCE Maths Methods study design on the VCAA website.
Unit 3
- Functions, relations and graphs. Polynomial, exponential, logarithmic and circular functions, and their graphs.
- Algebra, number and structure. The algebra that holds every other topic together.
Unit 4
- Calculus. Differentiation and integration, and how to use them to solve problems.
- Data analysis, probability and statistics. Discrete and continuous random variables, the binomial and normal distributions, and sampling.
Exams and SACs: There are two end-of-year exams. The first is technology-free, so algebra has to be quick and accurate by hand. The second allows a CAS calculator and includes multiple-choice and extended-answer questions.
Where students usually get stuck
- The jump from Year 11: small algebra gaps become big problems in calculus.
- The technology-free exam, where there is no calculator to fall back on.
- "Show that" questions, which need every step written clearly.
- Probability questions that mix several ideas in one long problem.
How our Maths Methods sessions help
- Short algebra and calculus drills at the start of each session build speed for the tech-free exam.
- Tutors teach the CAS techniques that save time in the second exam.
- We work through past VCAA questions by topic, then mixed exam papers closer to the exams.
- Sessions are recorded, so students can rewatch the tricky worked examples before a SAC.
How Maths Methods scales
In 2025, a study score of 30 in Maths Methods scaled to 35, and a 40 scaled to 46 (VTAC 2025 Scaling Report).
Scaling shouldn't decide subject choice: a high score in a subject your child enjoys usually counts for more. Read which VCE subjects scale up.
“Alexis had a quick and effective approach for getting my teenager organised and focused. And she was very quick to understand his weaknesses, managed to get him to self reflect.”

Common questions
Should my child do Methods or General Maths?
It depends on their strengths and the courses they're considering. Methods is a prerequisite for many science, engineering and commerce degrees. We're happy to talk it through on a call.
Can you help with Specialist Maths too?
Yes, subject to tutor availability. Tell us when you book.
What happens on the first call?
We learn about your child, their subjects and what they want help with, then suggest a plan and a tutor. There is no obligation to go ahead.
