What Units 3 and 4 cover
A plain-English summary of the current VCAA study design. You can read the full VCE General Maths study design on the VCAA website.
Unit 3
- Data analysis. Data distributions, associations between two variables, linear regression and time series.
- Recursion and financial modelling. Compound interest, investments and reducing balance loans.
Unit 4
- Matrices. Matrix arithmetic and transition matrices.
- Networks and decision mathematics. Shortest paths, minimum spanning trees, matching problems and critical path analysis.
Exams and SACs: There are two end-of-year exams: one of multiple-choice questions and one of extended-answer questions. A CAS calculator is used throughout, so knowing it well is worth real marks.
Where students usually get stuck
- Long, worded questions: working out what is actually being asked.
- Interpreting results in words, such as what a slope or a coefficient of determination means in context. Small wording slips lose easy marks.
- Financial modelling on the CAS, where one wrong sign changes every answer.
- Following network algorithms in the right order under time pressure.
How our General Maths sessions help
- Each topic is taught step by step on a shared whiteboard, then practised straight away.
- Tutors teach the exact CAS steps for each type of question.
- We use past VCAA exam questions by topic, plus our own VCE General Maths practice exams.
- Before the exams, students build a clear, well-organised set of notes to take in with them.
How General Maths scales
In 2025, a study score of 30 in General Maths scaled to 28, and a 40 scaled to 38 (VTAC 2025 Scaling Report).
Scaling shouldn't decide subject choice: a high score in a subject your child enjoys usually counts for more. Read which VCE subjects scale up.
“Thanks to Avin Learning, my child is approaching his maths classes with much more confidence. He looks forward to each tutoring session.”

Common questions
My child is moving from Methods to General Maths. Can you help them catch up?
Yes. We start with an assessment of what they already know and fill the gaps in the topics Methods didn't cover.
Do you have practice exams?
Yes. We write our own VCE General Maths practice exams in the VCAA style, with worked solutions.
Is General Maths enough for university?
Many courses accept it, but some ask for Methods. Check the prerequisites of the courses your child is considering on VTAC.
